
The
First International Ballet Competition
"Maya"
took place in August, 1994, in St.-Petersburg.
The most prestigious ballet figures were in the
1994 Jury chaired by legendary Maya Plisetskaya. The names of the laureates of the
First Competition are worth to be mentioned: Benjamin Pech, Opera de Paris (Grand Prix and the
First Prize male winner); Elena Philipieva, National Opera and Ballet Theater of
Ukraine (the First Prize female winner); Stephane Phavorin, Opera de Paris (the Second Prize male
winner); Anna Polikarpova, the Hamburg Ballet (the Second Prize
female winner); Victor Alvarez, Deutsche Oper, Berlin (the Third Prize
male winner); Egle Shpokaite, the Lithuanian National Opera and
Ballet Theater (the Third Prize female winner).
The special prize "For the Best
Partnership" was awarded to Ivan Lishka, the Hamburg Ballet. For them
"Maya" Comptetition turned out to be a
real artistic springboard to the
high-professional ballet, a gate that led them to
the stages of the world's greatest theaters. The
special prize of the Jury "For the Best
Choreography of a Contemporary Piece" was
given to John Neumeier (Germany).
