The Russian Ministry of Culture, the City Government of St.-Petersburg, and the public organization "Inernational Ballet Competition "Maya" are the founders of the International Ballet Competition "Maya".

St.-Petersburg, the cradle of Russian ballet, which gave to the world such luminaries of dance as A. Pavlova, M. Kshesinskaya, T. Karsavina, V. Nizhinsky, G. Ulanova, R. Nureyev, M. Baryshnikov, is the ideal place for such an international competition. The city is the home for the world famous Mariinsky (formerly Kirov) Theater, the Vaganova Russian Ballet Academy, the Choreography Department of St.-Petersburg Conservatoire, and many first class ballet groups.

The purpose of the Competition is to identify talented young dancers with extraordinary artistic individuality, promote new works in modern choreography, and support the professional careers and international reputation of the winners of the Competition.

The idea of the competition "Maya" was proposed by a well-known St.- Petersburg producer Vladimir Chernin and approved by Maya Plisetskaya, who led the organizing and creative work for realization of this project. as the President of the specially organized public organization "St. Petersburg. International Ballet Competition "Maya"
